GrowSmarter kicked off on 1 January 2015 and ran until 31 December 2019. The project received €25 million in funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. “Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding.

To this end, Cologne has joined the city consortium from Stockholm and Barcelona to jointly receive funding from the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Union to the tune of 25 million euros. GrowSmarter is an EU project testing and implementing 12 integrated smart city solutions that reduce climate impact while creating growth in three Lighthouse Cities: Stockholm, Cologne and Barcelona. The idea is to create a ready market for these smart solutions to support growth and the transition to a smart, sustainable SmartCity Cologne is a collaborative project of companies, private persons, organizations and authorities that aims to adapt our city to the challenges raised by climate change. Our areas of focus include sustainable mobility, energy efficiency of buildings and low-emission heating facilities and ensuring an integrated infrastructure as the city expands. Participating cities include Stockholm, Cologne and Barcelona, along with several so-called Following Cities. GrowSmarter is run under the auspices of the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, which runs until 2019.

The GrowSmarter project forms part of the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the aim is to develop innovative solutions for the smart cities of the future. The idea is to create a European economy that is more socially, environmentally and economically sustainable, by putting into practice innovative technologies and solutions. GrowSmarter Stockholm is one of the project’s three demonstration cities alongside Cologne and Barcelona with 12 smart solutions implemented around the city. The focus of GrowSmarter is to develop low energy districts, integrate both active and passive … SmartCity Cologne as a platform for various initiatives focusing on climate protection and energy transition, including the project GrowSmarter. Cork City is currently a ‘follower city’ in a Horizon 2020 Smart Cities and Communities project called GrowSmarter, a €25m initiative (lead cities: Stockholm, Cologne, and Barcelona). Below they share first insights from the Smart City projects GrowSmarter (Cologne), Smarter Together (Munich), mySMARTLife (Hamburg) and MAtchUP (Dresden).

GrowSmarter has contributed to making districts more efficient in the three partner cities by retrofitting more than 100,000 m² of residential floor and 21,000 m² of tertiary floor. The resulting City KPIs have been a total reduction of 30% in the yearly purchased final energy by the buildings participating in Barcelona; 37% reduction in Cologne; and 64% reduction in Stockholm.

In this context within the GrowSmarter project, Cologne demonstrates 12 smart solutions in the fields of low-energy districts, integrated infrastructure and sustainable urban mobility in Mülheim, a vibrant area in the north-east of Cologne, which is currently undergoing a process of regeneration. GrowSmarter shows trend-setting climate protection measures.

Cologne is one of the few German partner cities in the European lighthouse project for "Smart Cities & Communities (SCC)" and is part of our project consortium GrowSmarter, Hamburg has developed an ambitious strategy for becoming a "digital capital", and "hidden champions" like Norderstedt near Hamburg or Ulm in Baden-Württemberg are successfully on their way of digitization.

German city Cologne has also taken up the challenge as one of the three Lighthouse Cities of the GrowSmarter initiative. In common with other Horizon 2020 projects, Cologne has committed itself to 12 solutions in GrowSmarter’s three areas of impact: Low Energy Districts, Integrated Infrastructures, Sustainable Urban Mobility.
