»Optical illusion« sounds derogative, as if exposing a malfunction of the visual system. Rather, I view these phenomena as highlighting particular good adaptations of our visual system to its experience with standard viewing situations. These experiences are based on normal visual conditions, and thus under unusual contexts can lead to inappropriate interpretations of a visual scene (=“Bayesian interpretation of perception”). While 2020 itself unfortunately isn't one big optical illusion (as far as we know, anyway), there are still plenty of brilliantly distracting examples online – and one currently doing the rounds on Twitter might be the most mesmerising yet.

Optical illusions are presentations of objects as well as situations in such a way, that it confuses your vision, and projects double meaning of the same image to you simultaneously. Optical illusions are really fun to see, as they confuse us about what the picture really is, and play with our minds. Though it’s a modified form of any image, or any image shot from a different perspective, but still it makes our minds think that the image depicts more than one situation.

The information gathered by the eye is processed in the brain to give a perception. That is normal, but in these cases the appearance does not tally with a physical measurement of the stimulus source. Discovered by German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus, this optical illusion was popularized by British psychology Edward B. Titchener in 1901. Thus known as the Ebbinghaus illusion, or Titchener circles, the effect illustrates how our brain "uses context to determine the size of objects." Find GIFs with the latest and newest hashtags!

It’s because we don’t see with our eyes, we see with our brain. And the brain can easily be tricked. Optical illusions occur because our brain is trying to interpret what we see and make sense of the world around us. Optical illusions simply trick our brains into seeing things which may or may not be real. Try out some of these illusions and discover just how tricky it can be for your brain to accurately interpret the images from your eyes. The Ehrenstein illusion is an optical illusion studied by the German psychologist Walter Ehrenstein in which the sides of a square placed inside a pattern of concentric circles take an apparent curved shape.
